Two- Convergence Communication media consists of media broadcasting, voice telephony, and on-line computer services. A convergence, or unification of communication media, means that all the different media that had been on a separate platform will be transferred to on usable operating platform. For example, in the past, personal computing and internet did not offer data processing, images, and audio, convergence of telecom, data processing, imagine technologies, has opened a pathway for the consumers use the similar technologies in a different context. “Telecom companies become media houses. Food retailers become banks. Computers become phones and video stores. While we will see convergence in products and services on price, features and quality, we will also see huge new investment in diversity.”
Three Examples of convergence are Internet services delivered to the television via Web Television Email, www, can be accessible via digital TV recorders, like mobile phones Web casting different types of media at the same time is also considered a convergence- radio, TV on internet Voice telephony, which is the traditional telephone, with Internet to offer fast and cheap connections. Four These five types of convergence are the result of, or indicating factors of the growth in convergence industry. Functional convergence encompasses the fact that when converged, technologies used for a single purpose will be used in multi tasks. It is almost like an upgrade and merging of the combined devices. An example would be a mobile phone. Technological advances in the transferring internet data through a single fibre optic or satellite, is a convergence of technology, to assist a goal- provide the internet. Economical convergence is a new type of convergence that occurs as a result of societal change or shift. A dominating oligopoly (or les customers), the companies affected, can bend to the collective forms of profit. Telecom company could provide internet on the mobile services or residence telephones could also bring a broadband connection to the internet. The economical convergence is said to be the blurring of the industrial lines, destroying the individuality and diverseness in a technology and policy. The last two are co-related, as result of geographical convergence, more political convergence can happen. When the world becomes a connected place, and a distance between Alaska and Zambia are measured in few seconds, by the satellite connection, the exchange of ideas around the world encourage some regions to transform the political thoughts to fit more successful models elsewhere in the planet. Therefore in a regional level, the political convergence also have the power to transform a national ambition toward one political thought.
Five Teleconferencing provides a space for individuals and and offices who aren ot in the same physical space communicate with each other. The united States teleconferencing revenue in 2004 was 2.25 billion dollars, and it keeps growing. Teleconferencing allows to share briefs, training, demonstrtions, workshops without difficulty. There are two types of teleconferencing: three way call and conference calls. Conference calls have two subunits called Meetme conferences and ad hoc conferences. The main difference is that in MeetMe the attendees have to call allocated number to get involved in the conference. Whereas ad hoc has operators and moderators who will invite the attendees into the conference.
Six The main importance is the software. PBX or Private Branch Exchange is for businesses and its branch offices around the globe. Each line of the office in the main corporation will be connected to the general line Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). It is much less expensive way for businesses since they don’t have to have extension lines for every phone conference. Conferences can be held on individual company owned systems or have a conference call hosting providers. Both of these need bridge and apply add-on technology to enhance the ability- such as call recording, call operators, attendee polllin, etc. To provide confidentiality Personal Identification Number or PIN is asked upon entry to the conference. Few things that is required is software to coordinate the meeting, ample server space and bandwidth and a telephone line. For internet based conferences, the devices needed are: microphones, internet connection, computer.
Seven More appealed than the teleconferencing, video conferencing offers images of the people the users are conferencing with. It is regularly used in long distance relationships between individual users, schools, organizations, to teach, show visual maps, etc. video conference offers possibilities for schools, colleges and libraries with formal instruction, connection with guest speakers, experts or use it as multi-school project, collaboration, proffesional activities and community events.
compressed video systems allow a larger audience with high quality video. compressed video is dedicated to a single bandwidth. Its transmitted via ISDN (Internet SERVICES Digital Network) line or over IP(Internet Protocol) line.
