The last few years, technology has made enormous advances in the development of personal communications devices. The mobile phones have become digital and they are able to do so much more than just connect the user with somebody else to talk to each other. The use of networks within a company is growing because it allows the employees to work faster and more closely together and to communicate in an efficient way. With the relatively stable economy, although with several recent crisis in the American economy affecting the world economy, the consumers are comfortable with spending money. This leads to the increase of personal communications devices being purchased. Personal communications devices are to some extent a luxury product. Although it is essential for people to communicate, there are other ways to do it; personal communications devices just make it easier. With the wealth of the people being relatively high, the environment will eventually have to bear the consequences. More people will buy more electronic equipment that they do not actually need, since they may have an older version of the communication device that still perfectly works, but that is not the newest technology. This causes perfectly good working communication devices being thrown away which will lead to obsolete hardware, causing damage to the environment. Obsolete hardware is difficult to dispose and it is one of the biggest threats to the environment.
Also, with the increase of personal communications devices, there will be a need for more factories producing the communication devices. Personal communications devices bring great wealth for some (the producers), a modest improvement for many (consumers), but air pollution for everyone. The air pollution caused by the production of technological devices and the factories producing them, will affect the environment tremendously. It may lead to smog, causing the air quality to decrease.
The decrease in air quality is bad for the environment but eventually it will affect the people as well. Poor air quality forms a risk on the health of the people as it might lead to respiratory diseases. This consequence of the risk of diseases due to the effect that personal communications devices have on the environment is especially very common regarding the mobile phone. There are many concerns that the radiations of the mobile phone causes brain tumors or other horrible diseases. There have been many debates about whether or not personal communications devices are bad for the health. As people become more and more reliant on technological machines or personal communications devices, the fears of the possible effects personal communications might have keep increasing.
The development of technology in general and personal communications in particular, has mainly bad effects on the environment as it causes pollution and possible diseases. But there is a positive side to the development of technology for the environment. Technology makes us able to learn more about the possible effects of technology. Therefore, it will make us able to understand better how we are affecting the environment by using technology. Although it is technology causing the harm to the environment in the first place, it is still technology that provides us a way to do something about the consequences for the environment. You have got to love the irony.
In the end, it is really the way in which we use technology that matters. When we use technological devices to its fullest, the pollution that obsolete hardware will cause to the environment will decrease and personal communications devices can be used in a more sensible way.
