Margot Leysen Grade 12 Text of Presentation 4: Effect on personal productivity of personal communications devices
SLIDE ONE. Electronic methods of communications are of growing importance, especially for the working people and in the business world. Using personal communications devices has allowed for faster yet cheaper communication over long distances. However, personal communications devices are expensive and they need a lot of maintenance.
SLIDE TWO. The last few years, information technology has made advancements like never seen before. This led to the rapid development of Personal Communication Devices. Today there is a wide variety of PCDs and here are some examples: The fax, mobile phone and computer are worldwide used and they allow rapid communication. In the business world a network within the office and a pager are commonly used. This enables the employees to work closely together and have effective communication. By having good communication they can work faster and more efficient, which will increase their personal productivity. What is most commonly used for personal communication is the Internet. It allows the user to send emails and retrieve information online. The use of email is so highly exploited due to the fact that it allows the user to reach many different people at once and it is free, besides the cost of the internet subscription.
SLIDE THREE. The rapid development in Communication Technology has many different positive effects. Firstly, personal communication devices can send a large amount of information and as I mentioned before, they allow users to reach many people at once. By using communication devices, the user is also able to retrieve a lot of information very fast. For example, in the business world, the employer might decide to put the general agenda, containing big meetings or important notices, on the network of the company. This way this information reaches all the employees at once and they are able to retrieve the needed information in a quick and efficient way.
Another great advantage of personal communication devices is that they allow constant communication. People do not have to be in the same room to actually talk to each other and they can still work together. This makes their work more time efficient, since they do not have to leave their office, which will eventually increase their personal productivity. Together with constant communication, personal communication devices also allow for immediate feedback. As you look at how people used to communicate for example by post, they had to wait several days to get feedback. Now the information is send on the click of a button and the receiver can give feedback immediately. This also will increase the personal productivity since they do not lose time waiting for an answer of somebody else.
As you can see, there are many positive points brought by personal communication devices and they have brought an increase in personal productivity.
SLIDE FOUR. PCDs cause for an increase in personal productivity which may lead to people or companies to become too dependent on them. With technological devices there is always the risk of electronic failures. If you rely too heavily on the use of technology, the productivity will stop immediately in case of failure. Also, when PCDs are very heavily implemented within a business, the privacy of the employees might be in jeopardy. The employee will be able to track what the employees are doing since everything is digital and might be on the network of the business. This will have negative consequences on the psyche of the employees since they might feel that they are being watched all the time. Eventually, this will lead to decrease in personal productivity.
PCDs allow constant communication. This means that employees can be bothered with work wherever they go by for example their mobile phone or their pager. Also, the employee might have a computer at home that allows him to access his work from home. This will lead to a decrease in boundary between work and home. Linked to this negative effect of personal communication devices is the fact that constant communication might lead to burn-outs or even depressions in worst case scenarios. People will never be at ease because they can be bothered with work at any given point and people are able to contact someone much easier with the personal communication devices. All these factors might eventually lead to a decrease in personal productivity since it might lead to negative consequences for the psyche and the morale of the individual.
SLIDE FIVE. From all of this, we can draw some conclusions. It seems that personal communication devices have allowed a rapid increase in personal productivity. People are able to contact others or retrieve information much easier with the help of PCDs and with the further development of PCDs, the personal productivity will increase even further. It has also become obvious that due to the rapid pace of communication and in extreme cases, personal communication devices might have negative effects.
Effect on personal productivity of personal communications devices
SLIDE ONE
Personal Communications Devices Through rapid development in information technology, elaborate supply of different PCD.
Examples: Fax Mobile phone Computer Network within office Pager Internet
SLIDE TWO
Positive Effects Personal Communications Devices allow: - Large amount of data to be send at once - Information to be send to many people - Information to be retrieved fast (using websites, blogs)Example in the business world - Constant communication - Immediate feedback
-> All contribute to the increase of personal productivity.
SLIDE THREE
Negative Effects
Too dependent on PCD & technology -Information or work getting lost/deleted due to error of Personal Communication Device Loss of privacy Decrease of boundaries between home and work Being in constant contact may lead to - Burnouts - Depressions
-> Eventually will lead to decrease in personal productivity due to: -decrease in morale -negative consequences for psyche
SLIDE FOUR
Conclusion
Overall, PCD have increased personal productivity Further development of PCDs will allow users to keep improving their personal productivity Due to the rapid pace of communication that PCD allow, there might be negative consequences
