What dooes the telecommuting comprise of? Telecommuting allows employees to not travel long distances and still be at work. The the transaction between employee and a company, or between the employees, happen through use of teleconferencing, videoconferencing, interactive websites, instant messaging and email.
The teleconferencing and videoconferencing allow the employees to reach a conclusion, brainstorm, present a data instantaneously. It benefits the employees, because in the modern days where fuel prices are increasing, it means that driving and transportation fees can be reduced immensely.
The employee working at home can also have a lot more personal space, and interact with the family and friends more frequently, increasing their comfort with working and living at the same time.
However, an employee might lose the sense of privacy if telecommuting will keep the boundary between work and home almost invisible. Or they might easy get distracted by other people while doing the job, decreasing the productivity of the worker, and increase the amount of stress to meet deadlines.
Also, if the employees never see each other in real life, it brings the company to lead a group of strangers. It could be a bad effect on the company's morale and sense of group work. Also, how much loyalty will the workers have to the company they have never been to? When a person don't see the relation to the company as personal and real, the workers might get used to the notion that it is virtual, therefore not amounting to the degree of seriousness real life obs bring.
From the employers point of view, having telecommuting as a way for the workers, is just as beneficial. Firstly, there is no need for physical space, some companies depend on the use of only electronic communication devices and internet to produce the work. It also eliminates, the need to rent a big space, provide a healthy environment for the employees. And from there, there is also less need to pay the labor health insurance, as injuries and health consequences will be little direct from the company.
It is also more pressurizing on the security aspects of telecommuting method. There is a need for the IT administrator of the company to check that there is no viruses (this can be done by anti-virus, ani-spam seoftwares)and also maintain a safe environment, as well as, to control the transactions and archive the information in a safe place. Because everything the company owns is a very easy target of data deletion, or unauthorised data leak.
Also how to measure how much money should be given to the worker? It is hard to monitor the workers who are far away, and monitoring their work environments with cameras will be breaching their privacy. Therefore each employer has to set a due date and the amount of writing that is produced. And it is always important for them to compare the productivity levels of all workers.
In the end, the telecommuting, has decreased the amount of collision between employees and employers, and it means that employees are far more independent. It will increase the demand for companies to choose a person with skills to work on the computer well, and how to navigate through internet. It will also pose need for companies to selectively choose the personality types of employees, to assure that they can be independent workers.
