Presentation Topic Two: Mobile Phones and Associated Services and Uses
SLIDE ONE. This presentation is about the mobile phone and its services and uses. The mobile phone is a worldwide used electronic device allowing people to communicate with each other. Here are two definitions to consider:
SLIDE TWO. According to Wikipedia, a mobile phone is a short-range, electronic device used for mobile voice or data communication over a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. This definition is a rather technological explanation of a mobile phone. It provides the technological side of the mobile phone; a side that many users not necessarily know.
Another definition that we might consider is made by a professor, Professor Paul Levinson. He describes the mobile phone as ‘the fulfillment of humanity’.
According to him the two defining aspects of humanities are that we walk while we talk; that is what makes us human. His opinion is that to think is inevitably to want to talk to people who are not in our physical presence.
This definition is a more philosophical one but it does provide an insight in how the existence of the mobile phone can be perceived in different ways. It also shows that the mobile phone has become essential in our lives, and not only socially.
SLIDE THREE. Besides connecting people through communication, the cell phone has many other services and uses. I want to show you the beginning of a video which basically summarizes the services and uses of the mobile phone.
http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/cellphones/video.html
According to this video the main services and uses are as follows: -The mobile phone has a camera and MMS which can be used for sending and receiving photos or videos. -It is also a mailbox. People are able to send SMS to each other and through the Internet they can send and receive emails. -The mobile phone is also a GPS, allowing the user to locate places with their phone. -On a mobile phone you are able to put music or listen to the radio -And you can watch a movie or television through connection with the Internet -The mobile phone also features Infrared and Bluetooth, which allows the user to transfer data over a short distance.
The mobile phone has many uses and services that allows the user to be in contact with other people, entertain himself/herself with it or use it for work or school. For more information about the impact and the worldwide use of the mobile phone, I would recommend the very useful video, which you can access through this link: http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/cellphones/video.html
SLIDE FOUR. For this presentation I have used these websites for information and the video. Thank you for listening.
