Pres 7 Social Effects of the Widespread Use of Teleconferencing and Videoconferencing

SLIDE ONE. Videoconferencing and teleconferencing have changed the way people communicate with each other through technology. These two forms of communication have allowed people to communicate over a distance and videoconferencing allows them to even see each other.

SLIDE TWO. Videoconferencing is commonly described as interactive telecommunication which allows two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It can also be referred to as visual collaboration. People who are communicating with each other through videoconferencing are able to see each other and speak to each other at the same time. There are many softwares that enable videoconferencing.

SLIDE THREE. An example and commonly used software of videoconferencing is Skype. This software basically allows user to make telephone calls over the Internet. Videoconferencing is also increasing in its use in business meetings.

SLIDE FOUR. Teleconferencing is a telephone or video meeting between participants in two or more locations. Teleconferences are similar to telephone calls, but they can expand discussion to more than two people. Teleconferencing is different from videoconferencing in the way that the participants are not able to see each other. This is an example of a teleconferencing device which allows multiple persons to speak at once with someone on the other end of the conversation.

SLIDE FIVE. Teleconferencing and videoconferencing affect the communication between parties in many ways. These two types of communication allow people in remote areas to take part in the business world. Also, international trade is made easier for the same reason. By talking to each other on a regular basis, it will create the possibility of closer contact with international trading partners. By having conferences online, people can do business without having to go to each other. For people living abroad or distanced from their family and friends, teleconferencing and videoconferencing offers a way to communicate in person on a regular basis. For both teleconferencing and videoconferencing a major advantage is that it will lead to more effective communication. Since more people are able to take part in the conversation, more people are able to explain certain things for the people listening. Also, for videoconferencing the biggest advantage is that people are able to see each other. This enables them to read the body language of the other party which will increase the effectiveness of the communication.

SLIDE SIX. These forms of communication have rather few disadvantages since both parties should know each other since they both agreed to communicate. However, a social effect might be that less developed countries cannot participate in this form of communication due to lack of technological equipment available. So these countries are not able to take advantage of this development in technology and communication. This might increase the gap between developed and developing countries.

SLIDE SEVEN. For both teleconferencing and videoconferencing we can conclude that they have many positive social effects for business world and people living abroad. Also, there are few negative social effects because its main purpose is just to enable more effective communication over a long distance.
