Slide 1
Telecommuting or telework is working at home by using a computer terminal electronically linked to one's place of employment. First used in 1973

Slide 2
Employee satisfaction
One of the major factors is autonomy
In the experiment including 12,000 employees who are telecommuting done byPennsylvania State/American Psychological Association, the results were that the intensity of the telecommuting affected autonomy, family relations, and worker and employer relationship quality. These three effects, influence individual outcomes for the telecommuter: such as job satisfaction, performance, role stress. Over all the direct result of telecommuting was more variable career prospects for individuals with any physical impairment.

Slide 2
telecommuting environment consists of 1-on-1 or small-group ‘mini huddles’ that have clear objectives, takes place wherever convenient, and ends when objectives are met.

Slide 3
According to the US department of Enegry, there are 28 million telecommuters in 2001 in US alone. The approximate ammount of telecommuters in a global scale was 137 million in 2003.

Advantages and growth in technology:
Flexible options for people on maternity leave and
people with disabilities which results in greater talent pool.

Advances in PDAs, laptops and broadband connections for home use
Video conferencing and webcams needed for workers to cooperate and interact are growing because of the demand

Rita Walston, executive director of the Telework Consortium said:

“If you have 1,500 employees instead of having to provide workspace for each one you provide 300 people with a workspace on any given day while four fifths of the organization is working elsewhere.”

An example of such a company is Sun Microsystems .
56% of its employees work without an assigned office, which means they either work from home or use flexible office space. The company offers three categories under Open Work program: you have an assigned office on one of Sun’s campuses; flexible: you work out of flexible offices, drop-in centers; and home assigned: you work from home. The Open Work program earned $387 million in IT and real estate savings, and a 28K reduction in CO2 annually.

Slide 6- Requirements
Workers: Separating home from work is difficult。BUT it needs to be achieved, in order to not fall under time constraint, or emotional.

Employers: Face-to-face meetings with superiors , so the loyalty to the company will be reserved

Slide 7
public perception is that one of the un-teleworkable careers is a hotel concierge.

But in Hyatt Regency hotel in Santa Clara - Anna Mariano-Morris telecommutes.

The hotel paid to set up a webcam on her home computer and covering the cost of a T1 line to her home and 42-inch plasma television in the hotel lobby that also has a webcam for her to see the guests.

She can look up restaurants and local attractions online and even remotely print out directions for guests right there on the spot.
It saves an hour and half of driving

Facts
Teleworkers typically work 1-2 days per week (5.5days/month) from home.
45% of teleworkers have a separate home office space.
Teleworkers work: 38% of time at their computer, 17% on the phone, 24% on reading, research & analysis, and 9% in face-to-face meetings.
The potential US employer annual savings through telework from reduced absenteeism, recruiting costs, and from increased productivity could be as high as $441 billion  - source ITAC, 1999

Environmental effects

Reduced commuter traffic helps our environment in three ways:
It reduces toxic gases and dust particles spewed into our atmosphere,
It reduces chemicals washed into our waterways, wells, rivers & estuaries,
It reduces the need to have to find new sources of oil.

Every week 32,000,000 Americans could be telecommuting at least one day. They would not drive 1,260,800,000 miles (equal to 51,000 times round the Earth); would save 74,164,700 gallons of gas, worth $111,247,050
