SLIDE ONE. This presentation is about the Social and Ethical Considerations of Distance Learning, Digital Entertainment, Global Media, and Public Information Systems.

SLIDE TWO. A description of distance learning might be a field of education that uses technology to deliver education to students who are not physically "on site". Rather than attending courses in person, teachers and students may communicate at times of their own choosing by exchanging printed or electronic media, or through technology that allows them to communicate in real time and through other online ways.

SLIDE THREE. For distance learning a social consideration is that the schools providing the courses online use too advanced technology which might force the students to purchase new technological devices only for the course. This might make it difficult for the students to keep following the courses. Another social and ethical consideration is the equality of access to the interactive systems. Not everybody has the opportunity to participate in distance learning due to a lack in technological equipment or financial circumstances. Distance learning also brings new roles to both the teacher and the student involved. When the teacher has to provide distance learning, it will take much more effort from him or her. Effective distance learning requires extensive preparation, as well as adapting traditional teaching strategies to a new learning environment which often lacks visual aids. The role of the student is changed in the way that students must quickly become aware of and comfortable with new patterns of communication, learn to manage their time, and take responsibility for their own learning. A positive social consideration of distance learning for the student is that constraints of time, distance, and finances are overcome. Also, distance learning offers the opportunity to take courses or hear outside speakers who would otherwise be unavailable, and the ability to come in contact with other students from different social, cultural, economic, and experiential backgrounds.

SLIDE FOUR. Digital entertainment consists of practically every entertainment that you can think of online. It allows you to talk to people, watch movies, listen to music, play online games, etc.

SLIDE FIVE. An ethical consideration of digital entertainment is that it may include inappropriate or unsuitable entertainment online. Because it is difficult to control what is put into the digital entertainment, inappropriate entertainment might be put online. However, digital entertainment does provide social advantages for users. The entertainment is enjoyable and it makes time pass by in a fun way. Since people might enjoy the digital entertainment so much, they might end up spending a lot of time in front of the computer, the playstation or the television. Because they end up spending so much time in front of a screen, a social consideration might be that these people forget how to interact with people because they are busy looking at a screen.

SLIDE SIX. Global media is any form of information that can be received any place in the world, mostly because of the Internet and technology. It allows communication around the world, the sending of any sort of data by using technological communication devices.

SLIDE SEVEN. When looking at the social and ethical considerations of global media, I would like you to consider this quote from Tom Freston: It is said that kids from Australia, Hong Kong and Sweden have more in common with each other than with their parents."

I think this quote illustrates very well how global media has affected our social life. Since global media enables you to talk to the world which makes that media content and culture are exportable; people will be able to contact others from around the world and learn more about them and their culture. An ethical consideration of this might be that it might make people more open minded since they are confronted with much more diversity. However, a social consideration is that people need the skills to access, evaluate, create and participate with different forms of media 24/7.

SLIDE EIGHT. Public information systems are information systems available for public use. They are used in both the public sector and in the private sector, and both citizens and businesses may be users of such systems.

SLIDE NINE. Public information systems might be used in towns to explain maybe the history or the architecture of the time. You might have to consider a social problem in this. As tourist might be visiting this town, they might not be able to use the public information system as they cannot speak the language. Also, many public information systems are online, which creates a social consideration of accessibility. Since not all people have computers, they are not able to access certain systems. Public information systems are socially very helpful since they provide information and useful data for however is using the system. A type of public information systems is security camera systems. Although they can provide public safety, there are some issues of privacy that may arise. People might have problems with being filmed and monitored all the time, especially when they are not aware of it. So for this social consideration it is important that the public is informed about the security camera systems and how the images made by them are used.

SLIDE TEN. From all these social and ethical considerations, we might draw some conclusions. These four things I looked at all provide information and are a way of communication through technology. Also, what is prominent is that one social consideration that occurs with all of these, is the equality of access.
