Margot Leysen Grade 12 QW 1: The psychological consequences of people being in permanent contact
With technology developing further and people relying more and more on gadgets that allow them to stay in permanent contact with the outside world, there are some psychological consequences to consider. When people are able to contact you at any given time, a psychological consequence might be that an individual loses the feeling of privacy. No matter where the person will go, he or she might be interrupted by the outside world. Due to technological devices such as a mobile phone, a person is in permanent contact and is never really alone. Losing the feeling of privacy is significant for the psyche of an individual because people have to be able to relax and they might have the need be on their own to find some peace.
Being in permanent contact through technological communication devices is another form of communication than talking to people face to face. This way of being in contact might have psychological consequences in the sense that, although a person is talking to somebody else, he does not see the other person in real life. So although he is talking, he does not have human contact; he might be alone for most of the time. This might affect the way this person interacts with people. He might act differently and this will affect the psyche of this individual. Through his different behaviour, his own personality might change. A human being has the need to be around other persons. By talking to them through a telephone or mobile phone, he/she might still feel a lack of human contact.
An example of being in permanent contact is people who work from home for an office. Through technology devices and the Internet, they are able to stay in contact with their colleagues. The downside of this is that they no longer have precise office hours. Also, there is no boundary between work and home; their home is their work and vice versa. Often the choice to work from home is made to be able to spend more time with the family. But because they are able to work from home, they might end up spending more time working because their colleagues are will contact them at any hour of the day. When a person leaves the office, he stops working; but when this person is working from home, he never really stops because he is already home. This person might feel that he is never at ease. Their work will never be done because it is right in the house, they cannot escape it. A psychological consequence might be a depression or a burn out due the fact that this individual feels that he is working constantly. This may lead to losing all interest in work, family or life. An individual should be able to distance himself from work. A solution for this psychological consequence might be making an office space in the house but not everybody has this option; either a lack of money or a lack of space. Being in permanent contact with the outside world can have an enormous effect on the psyche of an individual.
Not only are there psychological consequences for the person that is in permanent contact, but there are also consequences to consider for the people around him; his family. They will have to deal with a person constantly being distracted or leaving the room to talk to somebody else on the phone. This may lead to tensions within the family since they get irritated by the fact that this person is devoting so much time on his work, and is not spending it with his family. They will also feel never at ease, because they know he might be interrupted by work. A psychological consequence for the people around the person that is in permanent contact might be that they feel underappreciated. They might become restless because they always have to consider that the other person might be contacted at any time.
With the new technologies allowing people being in permanent contact, it is important to make regularly cutting yourself off from the outside world. This will allow you to relax and become at ease. This is important to limit any psychological consequence that contact with the outside world might bring. Finding a balance between being in contact and being on yourself (in face-to-face communication) will allow the individual to take advantage of the possibilities that technology brings, while taking care of his own psyche.
