Margot Leysen Grade 12 QW 9 Emerging Technologies as the Result of Convergence of Computers and Communications Technology.
Through development in the making of computer technology and communications technology new technologies and devices have emerged that combine these two technologies. The emerging technologies represent new and significant developments in communication through technology as they make communication more efficient and easier by using computers.
A good example to illustrate the development of emerging technology is the creation of 4G mobile phones. These types of mobile phones connect people with each other but they also allow voice, data and streamed multimedia. 4G mobile phones allow for wireless communication making the user able to communicate anytime, anywhere. The ‘fourth generation’ mobile phones are even better at communicating than ‘third generation’ mobile phones, and the development of 4G shows that through the converging of computers and communication technologies, emerging technologies keep emerging, allowing more effective communication by the use of computers.
A development in technology that has allowed emerging technologies to arise is the creation of the Internet. The Internet is crucial in the connecting of people to allow them to communicate through technology. The Internet has opened up many opportunities, from finding out information, conducting communications globally, e.g. through e-mail, voice mail, e-commerce or generally just having fun through on line chats or instant messaging. The converging of computers and communications technology has allowed for more developed devices to do tasks such as e-mail and e-commerce.
Apart from Internet a PC allows communication of information through Compact Discs, pen drives, printers, flash memory cards and exchange of information within a local network through LAN. All these types of communications through technology will lead to more effective communication.
Another example of emerging technology is videoconferencing. By using computers and communications technological devices, such as webcam, microphones, etc, the users are converging computer technology and communication technology into on emerged technology.
Converging technologies do not only make new emerging technologies but they also allow for the improvements in already existing emerged technologies. Take the keyboard as an example. The keyboard has always been part of the computer to communicate information by using technological devices. But by converging technologies even more, it has allowed for the creation of touch keyboards. This makes its use easier since it weighs less and the user might find touch keyboards easier to work with than regular keyboards. So not only does the converging of technologies allows for new emerged technologies, but it also improves the existing technologies and technological devices.
To conclude, we can say that the convergence of computers and communication technologies has allowed for improved ways to communicate through technology. Not only has become the communication more efficient but it allows the user to use different communication devices that he/she can choose, according to his/her preferences. Many emerging technologies have developed by converging computer technology and communication technology.
